Double chance: what you are really buying

Covering two outcomes out of three is reassuring, and costs exactly what it buys in safety. The maths is short and worth doing once.

By The PRIZIFOOT team

Double chance groups two of a match’s three outcomes: 1X (the favourite does not lose), 12 (no draw), X2. Its probability is simply the sum of the two outcomes covered.

The price of peace of mind

If a home win is worth 50% and the draw 25%, the 1X double chance is worth 75%. Its fair price is therefore 1 ÷ 0.75 ≈ 1.33, before margin. You trade return for a higher success frequency: the win rate climbs, the expectation does not improve on its own.

It is a psychologically comfortable market and an easily disappointing one: winning a little often is enough to lose over time if the price paid for that steadiness is too high. The rule does not change: the question is still p × c − 1.

Its most defensible use is reducing variance over a long run, not chasing safety match by match.
